Closing Ceremonies at Sydenham
I would like to thank Mrs. Strong, grade 4 teacher, for organizing the incredible talent show at Sydenham.  A sincere thank you to Jonathan Coffey and Siobhan Osborne for being the event's masters of ceremonies.  The evening offered both laughs and tears while highlighting the singing, acting, dancing, and overall creativity of the students at Sydenham.   Ms. Alanna Murray offered greetings from the board and Mme Kasperavicius and Mme Doneathy shared their memories and insights as being both students and now staff at Sydenham.   Mrs. Veroni, the teacher who has been at Sydenham the longest, shared the history of the school and the school's longstanding tradition of academic excellence, culture, and community building.   Mayor Barb Clumpus, from the municipality of Meaford, and Mayor Ian Boddy, Mayor of Owen Sound, brought greetings from their constituencies.  Also, a sincere thank you to Rachel Taylor and Rhonda Shannon for catering the event and the spectacular cake creation honouring the identity of Sydenham.

It is hard to believe that this  is Sydenham’s last  newsletter.  I would like to thank you, the Sydenham community, for all of your support in this ongoing collaboration that we call school.

The new administrators at East Ridge will be principal, Burke Mason and vice-principal, Kevin Wilson.  There is still another vice principal position yet to be filled.  Mr. Mason offers  years of experience with his most recent placement being at Hepworth Central Public School, and I know many of our staff know him from Strathcona  Senior Public School.  Mr. Wilson comes to East Ridge from Port Elgin Saugeen Central School, and he is a graduate himself of the French Immersion High School program .   I feel assured that I am handing the reins to an amazing administrative team.
All I can say about the month of June is  hang on!!  June 14th is the Kindergarten information night from 6-7 pm followed by SCC from 7-8 pm in Room 7.  Sydenham’s closing ceremonies will take place on Thursday,  June 15th from 6-7:30 pm.    June 21st is PACK and PLAY day at Sydenham—fun to be had!  Tuesday , June 27th is the Grade 8 graduation from 7-8 pm at the Bayshore followed by a dance .

Reminder that both June 29th and 30th are Professional Activity Days so NO SCHOOL.  The school will be closed on  July 7th at 12 pm as the doors will be rekeyed and staff will no longer be able to access this location.

The Sydenham Community and Bayview Public School communities continue to proactively plan for their union at the new East Ridge Community School effective September 2017.  To closely coincide with World Book Day, a literacy event organized by Sydenham’s School Council on Thursday, April 20, 2017 included participation from both schools to raise funds for the creation of a book nook at East Ridge.

To start the morning, a school-wide 30-minute read-a-thon was held at Sydenham and Bayview in memory of former Bluewater District School Board Trustee and local children’s author Linda Hamill, for her invaluable contributions to education and literacy.  Students were encouraged to wear their jammies as each of them took some time to get lost in a book to celebrate a love of reading.  A one dollar contribution from each participating student at both schools was equally matched by Sydenham’s School Council with all monies going towards the book nook, a cozy welcoming area in the library at East Ridge that will be used by classes, small working groups, one-on-one tutors, occupational therapists, and others.  The event raised over $800.

Following the read-a-thon, activities continued at Sydenham for the remainder of the day.  During the noon hour, several local celebrity readers were on hand to share their favourite children’s books with kindergarten to Grade 4 students.  Some of the guest readers included City of Owen Sound Deputy Mayor Arlene Wright, Sydenham Past Principal Keith Lefebvre, former NHL goalie Curtis Sanford, radio personalities Bob Wallace and Diana Meder, former Olympic downhill skier Larisa Yurkiw, among others.

The day concluded with a writer’s workshop for Grades 5 to 8 students featuring local author/blogger Jesse Wilkinson and local musician/songwriter and former Sydenham student Marshall Veroni.  The students received an engaging lesson on blog writing, which was followed by an opportunity to participate in a blogging competition in addition to a live musical performance by Marshall.

To acknowledge their involvement in promoting the importance of literacy, students received brand new East Ridge book marks funded through Sydenham’s School Council.  Students and staff were excited to hold in their hands the first ever promotional item for East Ridge!

Knowing how to read is just the beginning.  Motivating young people to keep reading, comprehend what they read, and develop the ability to think creatively are the end goals.  The Sydenham and Bayview school communities wish to thank all those who supported this excellent initiative to celebrate the power of words and raise a community of readers.
